Bill and family, I was saddened to hear of Opal's passing. Man, what an awesome person she was! She definitely lived a very full and prosporous life and she will be dearly missed by many. Unfortunately I will not be able to make it to the funeral to help honor and celebrate her life but I want you and your family to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and you most definitely will be tomorrow afternoon also!

I love you Aunt Opal, may you find the peace and rest that you deserve in God's home (although we all know you won't be resting much as you will be cooking and visiting and doing all those things you so dearly love)!!!!

Love,
Cara and family

I was sad to hear that Opal had passed away. She leaves behind so many that loved her dearly and will deeply miss her.\r\n\r\nI first came to know Opal when she lived in Vermillion and was cooking meals for the fraternity and sorority. I experienced some of her fine cooking as a friend of Bill’s and an invited guest in her home. Those were very special occasions not only for the delicious entrees and desserts, but also for the lively conversation that often centered around the politics of the day.\r\n\r\nI particularly delighted in the attention she paid to my then very young children. Before she became a grandmother to Lucas, Robert, and William, she was like a grandmother to my Richard and Susan. For the five years while we lived in Vermillion, until Richard and Susan were about 8 and 6, she was Grandma Opal, who lived just down the street and around the corner. Their own grandmothers lived hundreds of miles away and were not visited as often as was Grandma Opal. \r\n\r\nOver the years, after we moved away, there were precious few visits, but they were always greatly cherished. Richard still talks about the fabulous meal, dish after dish, that Opal prepared for him when he visited her on his solo drive across the country from our home in Virginia. Opal and Bill once visited us there when Bill was showing his dear mother around Washington, D.C. It was a marvelous time for us all!\r\n\r\nOpal lived a long, full life and touched the lives of so many. She deserves her wonderful rest in her heavenly home. God bless you, Opal\r\n\r\nGene Wiley\r\nOak Hill, Virginia

I am saddened to hear of Opal's passing, but grateful to have known such a wonderful person. I lived in the Sigma Nu house from 1985-88 in one of the rooms over the kitchen. There was nothing better than the smell of Opal's cooking coming up the back stairs, unless it was coming home from class on Fridays to Opal burgers, or witnessing her giving one of the guys a hard time for something she didn't approve of. Rest in peace, Opal.

Opal held a special place in my heart. She made life as a Sigma Nu interesting and the life of a houseboy fun. She had a great spirit that my wife and I still talk about. Opal will be missed but not forgotten. God Bless her family and friends.

My condolences to the family of Opal. My life was blessed by Opal as a young man finding his way through college at USD. As treasurer for Sigma Nu, I had the great pleasure of working with Opal. She touched the lives of so many young men and imprinted her zest for life. I am truly blessed that she was a part of my life. Thank you for sharing her with us.

My deepest condolences to Opal's family. Opal was a great cook, and larger than life person. I lived in the Sigma Nu house from 1989-1992. As one of Opal's busboy's, I learned right away how tough she could be, but determined, and passionate about cooking. The men of Sigma Nu will alway's be grateful for your loyal, and dedicated service over all those years.
Rest in peace, Opal, we love you!

My condolences to Opal's family. Opal was a great person, and I will always remember her fondly. I lived in the Sigma Nu house from 1987-1990. As one of Opal's houseboys I learned a lot from her, and I savored her cooking for three glorious years. Opal's cooking is still the standard by which I compare many foods. More importantly, Opal was more than a cook to us. She was like a grandmother who made us feel at home, and she ALWAYS kept everyone in line. The men of Sigma Nu love you, Opal.

Bill, I'm sorry to hear of Opal's passing. I used to love the Tip Top and ate there regularly in the 70's. I loved the way she told it like it was and was always honest with just how she felt. Hope to see you soon. Steve Stewart
